Born and brought up in Sri Lanka, I was taught meditating on the breath and loving-kindness as a child. Although I didn't know that it's yoga or much of its true powers, I always found solace in those quiet moments. However, with the demands of life, I gradually distanced from myself and my tranquil moments were soon faded away. I was no longer living, rather crashing into almost everything the world throws at me. I was bruised, sore and weak. Yet, Yoga found me again when I wasn't even looking.
I first entered a Hatha yoga (posture based) class as part of a free gym pass. I was in my early thirties living in Edinburgh, not long after my second daughter was born and the passing of my mother to cancer. I was heavily depressed. Despite all that, I was just hoping to reduce weight and relieve my aching body, not having the slightest idea of how yoga is going to heal me, not only my body, my mind and soul too in the coming years. One and half hours every week, I brought myself on to the mat to be with my body and breath, notice the wandering mind, retrain the body to unwind, find ease and balance with the right amount of challenge, allow the mind to calm and rest. Two years later, as I was returning to myself, I began to see the wonders of yoga. Continuing to heal and experience the physical, mental and emotional benefits of yoga, I found my new purpose. I trained to teach yoga so I can share this amazing art with others.
Along with my personal practice, I continue to train, study and research this lifetime worth of invaluable knowledge; and share them through my teaching, giving a safe space and guidance for my students to discover their own journeys in yoga.
